The Sapphire
The Sapphire – Did You Know?
Royal Blue Elegance: Blue sapphires have a timeless appeal that has captivated royalty and nobility for centuries. Their deep, velvety blue hues symbolize power, prestige, and elegance. One of the most iconic blue sapphire pieces is the engagement ring worn by Princess Diana and later by Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge.
The Cornflower Blue Standard: When describing the ideal blue sapphire, gemmologists often refer to the “cornflower blue” colour as the benchmark. This term originates from the delicate and vivid blue hue of cornflower petals, a flower found in meadows across Europe. A true cornflower blue sapphire is characterized by its medium to medium-dark tone, strong saturation, and a hint of violet that adds depth to the colour. This specific shade of blue is highly sought after for its beauty and rarity.
The Symbol of Truth and Faithfulness: Blue sapphires have long been associated with virtues such as truth, loyalty, and faithfulness. In ancient times, sapphires were believed to possess protective powers, guarding the wearer against envy and harm. They were also thought to bring good fortune and wisdom to those who wore them.
Star-Studded Sapphires: Among the varieties of sapphires, the star sapphire stands out for its remarkable optical phenomenon known as asterism. This effect creates a stunning star-like pattern on the surface of the stone when viewed under a single light source. The star is formed by intersecting needle-like inclusions of rutile within the sapphire crystal. The most prized star sapphires display a sharp, well-defined star that seems to float magically across the gem’s surface.
The Emerald
The Emerald – Did You Know?
Symbol of Love and Rebirth: In ancient cultures, emeralds were believed to symbolize love and fertility. They were associated with the goddess Venus, the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility in Roman mythology. This connection led to emeralds being given as gifts to express love and devotion. The green colour of emeralds was also linked to rebirth and the renewal of life, making them a popular choice for burial adornments. Ancient Egyptians, for example, often placed emeralds in the tombs of their deceased to symbolize eternal youth and vitality in the afterlife.
Incredible Green Colour: The mesmerizing green hue of emeralds is truly captivating. This colour comes from trace amounts of chromium and vanadium in the crystal structure of the gemstone. The presence of these elements gives emeralds their distinct green colour, which can vary from a deep, lush forest green to a bright, vivid green with blue undertones. The intensity and saturation of the colour greatly influence the value and desirability of an emerald.
Healing and Spiritual Properties: Throughout history, emeralds have been associated with various healing and spiritual properties. Some ancient cultures believed that emeralds could improve eyesight and promote overall well-being. The gemstone was also thought to soothe the soul and bring balance to the emotions. In modern metaphysical practices, emeralds are often associated with the heart chakra, representing love, compassion, and growth. Many individuals wear emeralds not just for their beauty but also for their perceived spiritual benefits.
The Ruby
The Ruby – Did You Know?
The Birthstone of July: Rubies hold the honour of being the birthstone for the month of July. Those born in July are believed to be blessed with the fiery passion and energy of this gemstone. Rubies are also associated with the zodiac sign Cancer, further emphasizing their connection to this month.
Corundum Kinship: Rubies belong to the corundum mineral family, which also includes sapphires. What distinguishes rubies from other corundum gems is their red colour, caused by trace amounts of chromium within the crystal structure. This element gives rubies their characteristic red hue and fluorescence under certain lighting conditions.
Healing and Spiritual Properties: Rubies have long been associated with healing and spiritual properties. In ancient times, they were believed to have medicinal properties related to blood circulation and vitality. Rubies were also thought to stimulate the base chakra, promoting energy, passion, and courage. Today, many still believe that rubies can inspire confidence, increase motivation, and ignite the fire within.
Famous Ruby Jewellery: Rubies have adorned some of history’s most legendary jewellery pieces. One of the most famous is the “Nur Al-Din Ruby,” a 325-carat ruby with a deep red hue. This ruby has a storied history, said to have belonged to Sultan Nur Al-Din Arslan Shah, a powerful ruler in the 13th century. Another notable ruby is the “Edwardes Ruby,” a 167-carat gemstone with a rich red colour, named after Major-General Sir Herbert Edwardes.
